The Cure for Creative Blocks of All Types

In 18 easy steps…

Important note: Always start by underestimating the time you’ll need to do the project in question – this way you’ll have a nice amount of pressure to draw from as fuel during those last hours before deadline.

Let’s begin… please follow along with each step, not jumping ahead before the previous step is fully complete and not skipping any steps (except #5 of course, everyone skips that one)

1. Clean up the kitchen – who can think with that mess cruelly imposing?
2. Organize your bills – you need not pay them, but definitely think about it, as this will help you realize how much you need the money from your upcoming project to pay for those much needed fashion accessories from last month
3. Look through fashion magazines – these can be one of the best ways to research emerging trends and discover shoes you might want to purchase (with the money you’ll get from the project you need to work on)
4. Create a visionboard – make a collage of the items you find yourself attracted to in the magazines you are using for trend research (just to keep things visually organized)
5. Read the Creative Brief (for obvious reasons)
6. Read your horoscope – it’s important to know whether planetary influences could have an effect on the creative process (like a Mercury Retrograde for example)
7. Make yourself a snack – you’re doing great, but you will need a good source of energy for the upcoming steps, maybe try a new recipe?
8. Look through recipe books and Google recipes for odd ingredients you have in the pantry – it’s a good time to use up the capers and condensed milk.
9. Organize recipes – how can you see what you have collected in your recipe scrapbook if it’s messy like that?
10. Have a break – you’ve done 10 steps only 8 more to go! (have some tea and sample the kitchen creations)
11. Take a nice relaxing bath
12. Clean up the kitchen – who can think with that mess cruelly imposing?
13. Gather up supplies – organize the things you’ll need for the project
14. Write a Blog article documenting your creative process as a tutorial to help other, less disciplined creative types
15. Call a friend for support and to bounce some ideas around (or maybe just gossip)
16. Go out for a walk – I always find that I get some of my best ideas when I’m in the fresh air just relaxing
17. Meditate – Just sit calmly and focus on your breathing for about 15 minutes, I find that this really helps you calm your mind and focus on the task at hand
18. Begin Project (or return to step 1 if you feel another round would be helpful to your creative process)

Thoughtful list, a few to add

Thoughtful tips, I was just generating a list of my own yesterday, though under a different heading. My favorites of yours are creating a time scarcity organizing non-related stuff (bills and kitchen). It’s amazing how much impact your environment has on your ability to work. Here’s a few I wanted to add that work for me:

  1. Put aside perfection – Chances are you can get 90% of the way there with 50% of the work, and almost nobody will notice the difference. Knowing it will take less time will increase enthusiasm for the project.

  2. Talk to someone else for more than 15 minutes – That gives you enough time to get beyond formalities and start talking about something meaningful.

  3. If there’s no one to talk to, talk to yourself – This is probably the most useful tool in my belt. I use a journal to ask myself questions and answer them. I can almost always find my blocks this way. Having these conversations in my head is more difficult because it’s easy to get sidetracked.

  4. Exercise is a big one for me – A walk is good, but I usually need a jog and / or some weights to work out the stress that invariably accumulates in my muscles when doing concentrated work. I also try to keep my body slightly active during the day by walking on a treadmill while working.

Cheers!
